| It's so COLD!!!! |
After a 4.5 hour drive yesterday from Johannesburg, we reached Nkomazi Game reserve.
In case you’re feeling sorry for us at our “tented camp”, here are a few photos to ease your mind. It is only a tent in that our room has canvas walls and ceiling. It is beautiful and well appointed. It became quite cold in the late afternoon and by dinner time we had pouring rain and hailstones nearly the size of 50 cent pieces!! It was 2 degrees Celsius at dinner time and dropped from there.
We had no functioning heat and went to bed with many layers on. It felt a bit like camping and I slept with my head under all the covers!! This has been remedied for tonight J
After a 5 a.m. wake-up call, we had tea or coffee and packed into the jeeps for our early morning game drive. It was amazing but literally freezing.
We saw several giraffe browsing and a few speedy, hard to photograph warthogs. (I’m trying Jason) Very soon into the drive we came across 2 young male lions with a recent kill of a baby giraffe. We sat for a long time observing their power hierarchy as to who ate first. A young lioness joined them and waited her turn. Later, an older male lion came upon the abandoned kill and helped himself. Nature put on a show of survival of the fittest which can be difficult to observe.
After a sumptuous brunch in a toasty warm tent, the afternoon brought editing of photos, plans for more and warmer layers for tonight’s game drive. I indulged in an outdoor bath with really hot solar-heated water.
It’s hard to believe this is really only the first full day of safari with all we’ve seen. Our hearts are full. tll
